What You Will Lose When You Retire
A WhyzMen summary
Dan Haylett is a UK financial planner who writes the Humans vs Retirement newsletter. His argument is simple: retirement is sold as a gain, but it is lived as a long run of losses, and almost nobody prepares men for them.
He names them plainly. When the work goes, a man loses his identity, status, mastery, his work tribe, the structure of his week, the sense of progress, daily stimulation, the purpose his job supplied, the steady drip of validation, and even the future tense. Then come losses in the body (capability, sharpness, and the sense of an open-ended runway), in money (earned income, the saving mindset, the perks), and in the future (the sense of becoming, cultural relevance, and the retirement fantasy itself).
Because our culture has no rituals for these losses, men hide them and call it freedom. Haylett has watched hundreds of clients walk this path. The ones who flourish do five things: they name the losses out loud, build a self that isn't their job title, find new tribes on purpose, learn to spend money on what makes life rich, and invent their own “nexts.”
Why it is here
Session 1 starts here. You cannot grieve a loss you have not named, and the second summit begins on the far side of that grief.
This is someone else’s published work, so WhyzMen links to the original rather than reposting it.
