Common Language
Common Language
The words WhyzMen uses, what each one means, and where it shows up. Type to filter.
Core term drawn in the Big Picture Borrowed frame another author’s model, used in one session Retired term WhyzMen now uses other words
204 terms
Act I / Act II Retired term
Retired. In the room, always say first half / second half. The Knapsack appendix (Charter E.2) should be re-worded to match at the next Charter revision.
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Advice wearing a question mark
“Have you considered…?” is advice in disguise and breaks the Clearness rule.
Agency · Belonging · Cause (the ABCs of Meaning)
The three places a man got meaning. A lifequake does not erase them; it reorders them.
anchor rope (for the triad’s purpose) Retired term
WhyzMen now says: Our Purpose (the rope is the triad).
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Avodah
The Hebrew word that means both work and worship. “The form of service changes. The calling does not.”
backpack Retired term
WhyzMen now says: the Knapsack (the pack).
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Barnabas Turn, The
S8 Practice of the Week. When a man runs himself down: hear it, turn it over, hand it back with a question.
Basecamp
Session 1: program overview, covenant and assessment. The doorway. One word, never “base camp”.
Below the waterline
Theory the facilitator carries but never names to the room. See Iceberg Principle.
Benediction
The closing Scripture blessing of every session. Always "Benediction"; "A Sending" is retired so that "sent" is saved for S15's Commissioning.
Big Picture, The Core term
The program artwork: first summit, the valley with the Harvest Tree, second summit, Jubilee at the peak, climbers roped and carrying packs. The one map every man keeps.
Bridge, The
The worksheet "From Mission to First Mile." The mission (unnumbered) is the near bank; planks 1–4 lead to the first mile, which is crossed together in the room. The name is reserved for this worksheet alone. The S5 slide is "Into the Harvest Charter," the movement is "The Hand-off," and the verb survives only in "mourn to bridge."
Bridges’ transition model (Ending · Neutral Zone · New Beginning) Borrowed frame
William Bridges' descriptions of each phase sit under Feiler's three phases on S3 s19 (October 16). Participant materials say "the Messy Middle," not "Neutral Zone"; Bridges' own terms appear only where the facilitator guide explains Bridges.
Brotherhood · brothers
The men of the cohort and, from S10, a man’s triad. “One story for your brothers.” Middle word of the program byline.
Buford's box Retired term
WhyzMen now says: the one thing in the box.
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Building · Cracking · Revealing
The container in three moves. The first half builds it (also called the scaffolding, or the provisional personality); the second half breaks it open and reveals what it always held. The second half is not a new container: it has an architecture, written down in the Harvest Charter. Never "filling."
Callback
A slide banner that brings back an earlier session’s idea, e.g. “CALLBACK · THE KNAPSACK · FROM SESSION 1.”
Caring Shift, The (§1.4)
What you cared about most at forty, what you care about now, and when it changed. “Strengths give you capacity. Caring gives you direction.” Charter §1.4, not §1.5.
Charter Advance
In-room warm-up writing toward a Charter section.
Charter at a Glance
One page from every man, read by the pastors before the blessing. Due March 1 (October 16).

Charter Sprint
The writing push during the Wilderness Between that finishes Part One.
Charter, The — Harvest Charter Core term
A man's personal constitution in four parts: Foundation · Vision · Action · Legacy. Always "the Harvest Charter" (or "the Charter" after first use) — never a workbook or binder. Version 11 is current. Lower-case "triad charter" is a different thing.
chasm · crossing · the gap (for the valley); Neutral Zone (in participant materials) Retired term
WhyzMen now says: the valley · the Messy Middle.
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Clearness Committee
Parker Palmer’s original practice. In WhyzMen, the longer full-committee format offered on request.
Clearness Room
A triad practice. One man speaks his question or mission; the others ask only honest, open questions and never advise. Demonstrated at S11, run by triads in Clearness Week.
Clearness Room Guide
The handout for running a Clearness Room in the triad. One name only — not "Triad Guide" or "Clearness Room: Triad Guide."
Clearness Week
The no-class week (Feb 15) when each triad runs its own Clearness Room on each man’s mission. Not “Field Week” or “T-shirt week.”
CliftonStrengths
Gallup's talent assessment: the Top 5 report ($24, gallup.com). Assigned at the close of S7, taken after S7, results used in S8. Gallup sorts the themes into four groups it calls domains; in the room say "Gallup's four groups," with a footnote that Gallup calls them domains.
Cloudy / Clear
Self-rating for a mission draft. “Cloudy is a permitted answer.” Mark it, take it to your triad, return in ninety days.
Commission (rung 1)
“I have been sent to ___.” The one rung of the mission that names the Sender.
Commission row
Row six of the Convergence Board: the gifts the body names, with an instance beside each.
Commissioning
S15: he speaks, his triad stands, the pastor blesses. “Blessing, not evaluation.”
Compass
A compass points: it means a man's values (S7 Values Compass) and his Life Theme (§1.1c), nothing else. The Rule of Life is a trellis, not a compass.
Compass Worksheet (§1.1c My Life Theme & Compass)
Workview and Lifeview essays read against each other and carved into a Life Theme. “The essays are the marble; §1.1c is the carving.”
Container to Charter (the crosswalk)
The S1 slides that show each brick of the container, what retirement takes, and the Charter section that rebuilds it.
Container, The
Rohr's first-half structure of identity, boundaries, security and roles: built, cracked, revealed. Lives S1–S3. Two named callbacks point back to the original, cracked container: the S9 Rohr quote and the S15 bookend ("walked in carrying a container"). There is no second container; S10 says "build the architecture" and "the triad charter is the frame that holds it".
Contribution (rung 2)
“I do ___ for ___ so that ___.” The working sentence of the mission.
Contribution Hypothesis
Clause two of the S8 sentence: “…which makes me suspect I am meant to ___ for ___.” A guess to be tested. It is not the mission.
Convener
The man in the triad whose only job is to send the first text for the triad project.
Convergence Board, The
S8’s one page with six rows: Wiring · Character · Non-negotiables · Trained Hand · Direction · Commission. “A convergence test, not a summary sheet.” Row six is filled at S9.
Core Two
A man's two core values, his non-negotiables (§1.2). Always two, never five. The two interval requirements in S9 are "the two musts," not non-negotiables.
Couples Conversation
S3 homework debriefed at S4: surprises, agreements, misalignments with his wife.
Covenant, Our
Six starting elements the cohort enters at S1: Confidentiality · Presence over Performance · Listening before Fixing · Punctuality & Follow-Through · Honesty with Grace · Prayer for One Another. “Rules are imposed; covenants are entered.”
Covenant, The Room’s
The five lines read before every Clearness Room: “We are here to listen, not to fix…”
Curated, not invented
WhyzMen does not paint the pictures. It picks what is true and hangs it where a man can stand in front of it.
Digital Companion · the website · reference layer Retired term
WhyzMen now says: Reader's Companion.
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Direction · Strategy · Plan (as Charter parts) Retired term
WhyzMen now says: Foundation · Vision · Action · Legacy.
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.

Domain Why’s, Ten
One line of Why for each domain, drafted with My Next Chapter.
Domains of Life — the Ten Domains Core term
The ten areas where life happens, and the ten fruit on the Harvest Tree. Always "domains," never "fields." Use the full canonical names with "&" wherever a domain is named (October 16); order and names are on the last page. The three chosen at S13 are the priority domains.
Dunbar’s layers · “your five” Borrowed frame
Friendship circles of about 5 · 15 · 50 · 150. “Your five” is a man’s inner circle of men.
Engine · Fuel · Steering Borrowed frame
S7 picture. Strengths are the engine, story is the fuel, values are the steering. Used in S7 only.
Enneagram Retired term
WhyzMen now says: — removed from the program.
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Equipping
The valley work that readies a man for the climb: the harvesting and replanting. “He does not climb the second summit on leftover strength.”
Essential Few, The
S13: choosing the few things that get your best. “Choosing the essential few is choosing your particular life.”
Essentialism Filter (§2.1b)
The three things your mission tells you to decline.
Essentialism · “Less, but better” · the 90% rule
“If it isn’t a clear yes, it’s a no.” Taught at S13.
Ethical Will
See Spiritual Testament. The Tier 2 expansion is Appendix K · Ethical Will, Expanded.
Evidence, not admiration
The witnessing rule: “I saw you ___ when ___.” One instance, attached.
Fellowship Gap, The
Session 10. Second-half friendships do not break; they thin. “A design problem, not a character problem.” This is the only approved program use of “gap.”
Field Report
S7 homework: share your two values with your wife or a close friend, ask “Do you see this in me?”, and bring back the answer.
Field Tests, Three
S11: The T-shirt · Two Doors · Three Conversations. “Go get five reactions.”
Field Week · T-shirt week · clearness style Retired term

five core values, ranked Retired term
WhyzMen now says: two core values.
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Five Gates, The
The S11 mission self-check: Recital · Why · Charge · No · Signature. Paired with the Felt Sense.
Five Losses, The
Identity · Structure · Relationships · Mastery · Purpose. "Name to mourn. Mourn to bridge." The fifth loss is Mastery, never Power: the thing or things you got good at doing and now have no place to do. On the S1 crosswalk, Mastery is what retirement takes from lane 7, Competence & Fluid Intelligence; some of it comes back converted as wisdom.
Five Weighing Questions
The S13 evaluation (§2.0). The fifth question: “What in my life would look no different if Christ were not in me?”
Flourishing Signs, The
In §2.2, the signs you would recognise if you were living it, each labelled with its canonical domain (October 16). Circle three you already live and one you are reaching for. The Charter table is the source; S12 s7 shows eight as a sample.
Fluid → Crystallized intelligence Borrowed frame
Raw speed peaks early. Accumulated wisdom rises through life. “Design, not decline.”
Focus-Man Protocol
The seven steps of one Clearness Room round: Frame · He speaks · Silence · Open questions · Mirror & affirm · He responds · Close & seal.

WhyzMen now says: Gallup's four groups.
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Four Phases of Retirement

Galatians Test, The
“Would this sentence still be true, and worth ten years of my life, if Christ were not in me? Rewrite it until the answer is no.” Charter §3.1b.
Gauges (Readiness gauges)
The Retirement Readiness Assessment read as a dashboard, not a report card. “You don’t shame a fuel gauge for reading low.”

The drive to care for the next generation. “The Drive Has a Name.”
Gleaning
Generosity built into the harvest itself.
Go Deeper · Read Deeper · ReadDeeper Retired term

This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Golden Circle (Why → How → What) Borrowed frame

Harvest Tree, The Core term
Soil = Faith · roots = what formed you (story, values, strengths) · trunk = who you are, your core · ten fruit = the Ten Domains · tending = the daily work (the Rule of Life is its trellis) · orchard = the brotherhood · sun = Jubilee overhead. WhyzMen now says: What Surfaced · Full-Group Debrief.
This term may still be useful, but WhyzMen has chosen to standardize on other language.
Harvest, The
The valley season: a man harvests the first half, tends its seeds and fruit, and is equipped for the climb ("Harvest the First Half," S9). At the second summit a second harvest comes: the shared abundance of everyone's gifts. Never the name of a debrief — debriefs are "What Surfaced" or "Full-Group Debrief."
his valley (for a personal low point) Retired term
WhyzMen now says: a valley moment.

Iceberg Principle

Jubilee Core term
The peak of the Big Picture. Release and abundance under God’s hand: rest, giving back, forgiving debts, with provision promised before the release. Jubilee is the destination; significance is only the direction.
Jubilee question, The
“What has God prepared in advance for me to do — and what must I set down to walk into it?”
Kitchen Table Conversation
S4 homework: twenty minutes with your wife on rhythms for the next season — protect, release, build together.
Knapsack, The — the pack Core term
What a man carries into the second half, chosen by weight (the plane crash at 8,000 feet). Always "the Knapsack" (the pack), never "backpack". Values ride in the top pocket from Basecamp; the One Thing joins them at S11. The conversions pocket at the bottom holds Wisdom · Both/And · Rope Team · Legacy; the rope hangs outside. "A pack is measured not by what it holds but by what it makes you leave." Callbacks S3, S5, S7, S8, S9, S11, S14; culmination S13; audit in Charter Appendix E.
Life Map
S5: your life drawn as a landscape with chapter titles, “peaks and valleys, not a straight line.”
Lifequake Borrowed frame
A life-altering disruption. It names the event; Moynes names the stages. The Messy Middle may also be described as a lifequake or a liminal space.
Listening before fixing
Covenant line and the one rule of every triad. “Do you want help, or just to be heard?”
Listening Kit

The group byline, with no terminal period. Not “Wise Men Seek” and not “Whys.”
Witness
Tier 2 program word with one meaning: the man who says back what he saw (evidence, not admiration) and never fixes. The sentence is "What I heard you say was ___." S14 and S15 deliberately use "What I heard you value was ___" for letters and testaments. S3's author slides are "Two Voices, One Passage," not witnesses.
