Jubilee

The Theology Beneath the Sun — a backgrounder

The picture’s sun is Jubilee. Here is the story behind it — from a ram’s horn in ancient Israel to the second half of a man’s life.

The Origin — a law of release (Leviticus 25)

The word is earthy: Jubilee comes from the Hebrew yovel — the ram’s horn whose blast announced the year. Count seven sabbaths of years (7×7), and the fiftieth is the Jubilee, proclaimed on the Day of Atonement — release announced from the heart of forgiveness. Three things happened at once: the land rested, debts were cancelled and the enslaved set free, and lost land returned to the family that had forfeited it.

Underneath sits one sentence: “The land is mine” (Lev 25:23) — no one owns, everyone stewards. It was the reset wired into the calendar, keeping Israel from hardening into the permanently rich and the hopelessly indebted. Its most famous line, “Proclaim liberty throughout the land” (Lev 25:10), is cast on the Liberty Bell. Whether Israel ever fully kept it is debated — which lets us hold it as a holy aspiration the culture could never quite live up to.

The Fulfillment — Jesus claims it (Luke 4)

The prophets kept the dream alive: Isaiah 61 anoints one to “proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” — Jubilee language. That is the scroll Jesus reads in Nazareth, then says, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” He casts himself as the living Jubilee. Now the debt cancelled is the debt of sin, the captives freed are all of us, the land returned is the kingdom restored. Jubilee becomes the very shape of the gospel: liberty, homecoming, a clean slate received rather than earned.

The Modern Echo — from Holy Doors to debt relief

The idea took ritual form in 1300, when Pope Boniface VIII declared the first Christian Jubilee; the frequency settled at every 25 years, pilgrims passing through a Holy Door as a physical crossing from old to new. The most recent ran from December 2024 to January 2026 under the theme “Pilgrims of Hope.” And the law was once taken at its literal word: the Jubilee 2000 campaign — named for Leviticus 25 — helped cancel well over $100 billion in debt for the world’s poorest nations. As Walter Brueggemann frames the tradition, Jubilee is Sabbath as resistance — the refusal of an economy of endless acquisition.

The Application — Jubilee in the second half of life

Read the four ancient movements as the geography of retirement — and the reason the byline says Igniting Jubilee:

Rest. The land lies fallow. A man measured by output for forty years is given permission to stop producing.

Release. Debts forgiven. He lays down the old striving, the unfinished scorecard, the identity welded to a title.

Return. The land comes home to its owner. He returns to who he was made to be before the career defined him.

Gift. None of it earned. The trumpet sounds for you — not because you achieved it.

The deepest confidence we offer a man is not “you can optimize your retirement.” It is the older, stranger promise of the ram’s horn: you can finally stop performing and come home.
