WHYZMEN · SESSIONS 11 AND 13 · A MAP, NOT A MENU
The Opportunity Map
Where your mission might go to work: sorted by who you serve and how you give
“The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep
hunger meet.” Frederick Buechner
Start with your sentence, not this list
At Session 11 you wrote: “I do ____ for ____ so that ____.” This map is built from the two blanks you
have already filled. It is not a buffet to browse. It is a map you read with your mission as the compass.
Read it in three steps
1. Find your row. Your “for whom” names the people. Rows A to H below are eight groups of people.
Pick the closest one.
2. Find your column. Your T-shirt verbs came from four families on the Session 11 verb bank: MAKE,
GATHER, TEND, CARRY. Most men’s verbs cluster in one or two.
3. Read where they cross. That square holds two to five candidates. The one your Field Tests said
gave you energy is usually the one.
USED TWICE
At Session 11, for Field Test 2 (Two Doors): your row tells you which organizations to call. “Where
does my ‘for whom’ actually live?”
At Session 13, for your experiment and your triad project: your square gives you a short list, and
your doors tell you which one to pick.
The marks
◆ Triad-sized. One outing of about three hours that three men can do together. These are ready-
made triad projects.
How often tells you the commitment: once · monthly · weekly · a season · on call. For a first mile,
smaller is better. A “weekly” can start as a single visit.

BEYOND THE FIRST MILE
Groups That Could Grow from WhyzMen
Not for Session 13. These are Rung 3 and beyond on the Cogenerative Ladder: structures, not single
projects. Bring them to First Fruits.
• WhyzMen Micro-Cohorts. 4–6 graduates meeting every other week, grouped by vocation (health
care, business, education, trades) or shared interest.
• The Barnabas Network. Men matched across age for mutual encouragement and mentoring.
• Men’s Grief and Loss Group. Peer support for bereavement, career loss, health decline; led by
trained graduates.
• WhyzQuest Adventure Groups. Trail sections, cycling, wilderness retreats as a setting for deep
conversation.
• The Porch, as a monthly habit. Rotating homes, a shared meal, one substantive question.
• Legacy Project Teams. A small team takes on one community problem for 12–18 months,
cogenerative style.
• Business as Mission Network. Men with business experience matched to social enterprises and
mission partners.
• WhyzMen Beyond NCC. Cohorts in other Pittsburgh-area churches using the same curriculum.
For men who think at scale
The UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals give global language to local work. Your row, in their
words:
A · Children and teens Quality Education (4)
B · Young men Quality Education (4) · Decent Work (8)
C · Older adults, the dying Good Health and Well-Being (3)
D · Heavy loads Good Health (3) · Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (16)
